Markham is one of Canada’s most diverse cities, with about half of our population recognizing another country as their place of origin. According to the 2016 Canadian Census, nearly 80 percent of Markham residents self-identify as visible minorities. In Markham, we celebrate the richness and vibrancy of our different cultures and communities, which present unique and exciting opportunities for city-building.

Our diversity is our strength. It means that our residents can benefit from the pleasures and wisdom of cultures that connect us to every corner of the world. But how do we build one community from so many? One of the answers is a diverse City Council and diverse representation on our school boards.

With the 2022 Markham Municipal Election fast approaching, Elections Markham encourages people of all abilities, ethnicities, gender identity and expressions, races, religions, sexual orientations, and other backgrounds to run for office and help build a better future for everyone. City Council and our local school boards deliver important services that residents rely on every day. When we have diverse perspectives and lived experiences at the table, we all win.

You can run for Council or school board office if you are:

  • A Canadian citizen;
  • At least 18 years old; and,
  • A Markham resident, property owner or tenant.

Elections Markham is proud to offer a new, convenient and easy-to-use online registration portal, and has launched a campaign to encourage people from diverse backgrounds to run for office. But hurry! The deadline to register is August 19, 2022 at 2 PM.

In this election, Markham voters will have 250 hours to vote from October 14 to 24, either online or in person for their Mayor, Regional Councillors, Ward Councillors and School Board Trustees.
